Do DIY Cleaning products really work?

Do it Yourself or DIY has become increasingly popular over the last few years. From cabinets to cleaning supplies, it seems that if there is a store-bought version of it, then there is also a natural or homemade counterpart. With all-natural or homemade cleaning supplies, there is always a debate as to if they are as powerful at knocking away that dirt and grime as the store-bought chemically enhanced ones are.

Every good cleaning caddy has at least one spray bottle of all-purpose cleaner. From countertops to tv stands, this stuff comes in handy all the time (especially if you have kids). Just about every big cleaning supply brand name has an all-purpose cleaner on the market. But can any of us pronounce anything that is in the product? The answer is probably not. If you can’t pronounce it, it’s perhaps not that great for you. I know that is the case for medicine and food, and it probably should be the same for the cleaning supplies that you are inhaling as you are using them.

An easy DIY or homemade all-purpose cleaner can be made at home in a spray bottle with stuff that you probably already have stored away in the kitchen. Mixing vinegar, baking soda, and either tea tree, lemon or lavender oil will get you an all-purpose disinfecting spray that you can pronounce everything in, and it smells a whole lot better than the other stuff on the market.

Make Your Own Cleaners

The amount of time that you are going to put into making your homemade or DIY cleaning supplies is well worth it. Not only are you going to save money by not paying the sticker price for the brand name supplies, but you are keeping harsh chemicals like ammonia out of your house, which ends up being better for you and the planet.

Not only are DIY cleaning supplies better for you because you aren’t going to be breathing in heavy chemicals when you are using them, but they clean just as well as the store-bought variety.

Other Safer Non- Toxic Cleaning Options

If you aren’t into DIY or don’t have the time to make your own there are other options for all-natural cleaning supplies. Not all store-bought things are full of chemicals. You have to be careful to read before you buy. Method All-Purpose Surface Cleaner is a non-toxic option which if free of harsh chemicals and smells terrific! Tesco’s also stock this brand which is convenient.

The Bottom Line

With the way culture as a whole has become more earth-friendly and conscious, it is only a matter of time before the big brand names produce something with little to no chemicals in it. But until then, there are plenty of options for someone looking to get away from cleaning with chemicals.
